In 2002, the auction house Bolaffi announced the acquisition of six samples that were the 1 cent coin struck on a 2 cents planchet, which were sold by post offices and banks during the preparatory period, before the introduction of the euro. 70,000 of these coins were struck on a 2 cents planchet with the Mole Antonelliana depicted on the reverse instead of the Castel del Monte, which is shown on the reverse of the Italian 2 cents coin. The Castel del Monte castle is located in Apulia and dates back to the 13th century. In the language of coin error specialists, this specimen is categorized under the flan errors, including this one with a striking error.
