Pertinax, Sestertius, 193, Rome, Very rare, Bronze, NGC, VF 4/5-3/5, RIC22
Head of Pertinax, laureate, facing right. Providentia, draped, standing to the left, holding her right hand above her head towards the star and placing her left hand on her chest. An extremely rare sestertius of Pertinax, who reigned only a few weeks at the beginning of the year 193, succeeding Commodus after his assassination at the end of December 192. As co-consul of the emperor, he is seen as a legitimate successor by the Senate, which appoints him to lead the empire. However, he takes the initiative to establish a "donativa," a cash donation to the soldiers, which he fails to fully implement, giving only half of the promised amount.
He is assassinated on March 28, 193 for this reason, leading to a new civil war, particularly with Didius Julianus and Pescennius Niger, two usurper emperors whose coins are extremely rare and sought after by collectors, and it is Septimius Severus who emerges victorious from these confrontations and is raised to power at the end of the year 193.
