Sabina, Aureus, 128–129, Rome, very rare, gold, Extremely Fine+, RIC: 2484. Bust of Sabina, wearing a double stephane, with braided hair gathered up, draped, facing right. Vesta seated left, holding a palladium in her right hand and a sceptre in her left hand. A very fine example, with a beautiful patina!

Light cleaning and slight hairlines in the fields. An old test mark at 10 o’clock on the edge. Struck for Hadrian’s wife, whose hairstyle is an excellent indicator of the fashions of the period, associated with the goddess Vesta, the deity most commonly linked to female members of the imperial family. Ex RIC II Hadrian 413A (aureus).
